Understanding the Science of ABA

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding and improving behavior. It is based on decades of research in learning, motivation, and human development. ABA focuses on how behavior works, how behavior is affected by the environment, and how new skills can be taught in meaningful, measurable ways.

Core Concepts of ABA:

1

Behavior is Learned

ABA is grounded in the idea that behavior changes over time based on experiences and interactions.

2

The Environment Matters

What happens before and after a behavior influence whether it will happen again.

3

Data Drives Decisions

ABA uses ongoing measurement to understand progress and adjust treatment.

4

Skills are Taught Systematically, Step-by-Step

Complex skills are broken down into smaller steps and taught using evidence-based strategies.

5

Reinforcement Strengthens Learning

Positive outcomes increase the likelihood of a behavior happening again.

What ABA Aims to Do:

ABA helps individuals build meaningful, functional skills such as communication, social interaction, daily living abilities, emotional regulation, and independence. It also works to reduce behaviors that may be unsafe or interfere with learning.

Why ABA is Considered a Science:

Science follows a basic process: ask a question, make a prediction, test it, look at the data/results, and interpret the data, replicate if necessary for reliable data.

  • ABA relies on peer-reviewed research and established learning principles.
  • ABA uses objective measurement, not guesswork.
  • ABA requires systematic assessment, individualized goals, and ongoing evaluation.
  • ABA emphasizes ethical practice, ensuring treatment is respectful, person-centered, and effective.

Comprehensive vs. Focused ABA — What’s the Difference?

Comprehensive ABA Services

An intensive, individualized approach for children who benefit from support across multiple areas — communication, social skills, daily living, play, and emotional regulation. Delivered in the clinic, home, and community, with direct therapy, caregiver training, and regular review by a licensed Board Certified Behavior Analyst.

At SBC — The Best of Me, comprehensive applied behavior analysis (ABA) is an intensive, individualized treatment approach designed to address multiple areas of development and behavior for children with autism spectrum disorder or related developmental or behavioral needs. Comprehensive ABA targets a broad range of skills and behaviors across domains such as communication, social interaction, adaptive living skills, play, learning readiness, emotional regulation, and reduction of behaviors that interfere with daily functioning or learning.

Our ABA services are delivered across multiple environments, such as the clinic, home, and community, and involve collaboration with caregivers and other professionals to promote generalization of skills. Treatment is based on ongoing assessment, data collection, and evidence-based behavioral interventions, with goals individualized to the child’s strengths, needs, and developmental level.

These services are higher in intensity and frequency than focused ABA services and include direct therapy, caregiver training, supervision of Behavior Technicians, and regular review and modification of treatment plans by Board Certified Behavior Analysts.

Focused ABA Services

A targeted approach for specific, clearly identified goals — like reducing a challenging behavior or building one key skill. Generally lower in overall intensity than comprehensive ABA, with the same evidence-based rigor, data collection, and BCBA oversight.

Treatment approach that targets a limited number of specific behaviors or skill areas that are impacting a child’s daily functioning, safety, independence, or quality of life. Focused ABA is designed to address clearly identified treatment goals, such as reducing challenging behaviors, improving communication skills, increasing social or adaptive skills, or teaching functional replacement behaviors.

Unlike comprehensive ABA, focused ABA does not address broad developmental domains simultaneously and is generally lower in overall treatment intensity. Services are tailored to the child’s identified needs and may be provided in clinic, home, community, or telehealth settings. Treatment includes ongoing assessment, data collection, caregiver involvement when appropriate, and evidence-based behavioral interventions designed to achieve measurable outcomes.

Focused ABA services are overseen by licensed Board Certified Behavior Analysts, and may include direct therapy, parent/caregiver training, consultation, and supervision of Behavior Technicians or other clinical staff.
